What's Confirmed

At Take-Two Interactive's annual shareholder meeting on September 17, 2026, CEO Strauss Zelnick directly confirmed that GTA 6 will launch as a single-player-only experience. When asked specifically about GTA Online for the new game, Zelnick pointed to the existing GTA Online as the thing that continues, describing it as "a robust business" that remains strong.

This wasn't a surprise — Rockstar's pre-order announcement and official store listings describe GTA 6 plainly as "a single-player experience," and both PlayStation Store and Xbox listings tag the game exclusively as single-player.

Will GTA 6 Ever Get an Online Mode?

Almost certainly — but Rockstar hasn't confirmed it. There has been no announcement of a mode named GTA 6 Online, no confirmed release date, and no confirmed feature set for online play.

History strongly suggests it's coming. GTA Online launched on October 1, 2013 — two weeks after GTA 5 released on September 17. Red Dead Redemption 2 followed a similar pattern, with its online mode launching in beta a month after the main game.

The most common leak points to a December 2026 online window — roughly a month after launch — but that comes from leakers, not Rockstar. Take-Two's wording makes a 2026 launch for the new online experience look increasingly doubtful, and a release sometime in 2027 is possible.

Rockstar's pattern

GTA 5 → GTA Online: 2 weeks later. Red Dead 2 → Red Dead Online: 1 month later (beta). Based on this, GTA 6 Online arriving within weeks or months of launch is the most likely outcome — but nothing is confirmed until Rockstar announces it.

Does Your GTA Online Progress Transfer?

Current speculation suggests players will need to start from scratch in the new online world, with no direct transfer of characters, properties, money, or vehicles from GTA V's version of GTA Online. However, those who played GTA V's version of GTA Online may receive a "returning players bonus" based on their in-game rank, money, or accomplishments.

Nothing about this is confirmed yet. Rockstar has not addressed progress transfer at all — treat any specific details you see as speculation until official word comes.

What to Do While You Wait for GTA 6 Online

GTA Online (the GTA 5 version) isn't going anywhere. Take-Two's CEO confirmed it will "stay in market," and Rockstar is still running weekly events and updates through at least October 2026. If you want to play GTA online right now, GTA Online is still the answer.

That also means our tools stay fully relevant. The heist calculator, Shark Card value checker and mission tier list are all based on GTA Online data — and that data isn't changing just because GTA 6 launched. If anything, the community is more active than ever heading into November.

The Bottom Line

GTA 6 launches November 19 as a single-player game. That's not a disappointment — it's how Rockstar has always done it, and the single-player campaign is the main event anyway. The online mode is coming, just not on day one.
